Fort Wayne, Ind. — The Steuben County Community Foundation recently awarded a grant of $19,000 from the Ralph E. Taylor Conservation Fund to Easterseals Northern Indiana for conservation activities and education.
The goal is to ensure a sustainable future by educating Easterseals Northeast Indiana and Cardinal Services participants on the importance of caring for the Earth’s resources and promoting environmentally responsible behaviors.
Grant funds will be used to purchase activities, supplies and educational materials and contract with Purdue Extension and Sunny P.A.T.H.H. in Whitley County. Sunny P.A.T.H.H. will teach a wildlife conservation curriculum to the participants at Easterseals Northeast Indiana and Cardinal Services.
Additional activities and lessons will include:
- Recycling and reducing efforts
- Promoting plant-based diets by creating/caring for raised gardens
- Understanding the effects of pollination on the ecosystem by raising bees
- Learning the environmental benefits of composting
- Exploring wildlife conservation through animal-assisted activities
- Field trips to nature preserves, state and national parks, watersheds, recycling facilities and other venues
