A Day of Creativity and Connection at Easterseals Northeast Indiana
Each weekday, around 45 people with disabilities arrive at the Easterseals Northeast Indiana Creative Learning Center in Columbia City, eager for a day full of laughter, learning, and engaging experiences. The CLC, as it’s fondly known, is more than just a day program—it’s a vibrant community where individuals of all abilities explore their interests, build friendships, and develop life skills.
From morning exercise to crafts, karaoke, trivia, and even ballroom dancing, the Creative Learning Center is designed to offer a variety of activities that meet individuals where they are and help them grow. Staff members, including dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), guide participants through their day with warmth, flexibility, and care.
Meet Christina Sipe: A Heart for Service
Christina Sipe has been a Direct Support Professional at Easterseals Northeast Indiana for eight years. She began her journey in a group home, working nights, but eventually transitioned to the first shift at the Creative Learning Center in search of a more balanced routine. What she found was a meaningful calling.
“You have to go in there with a big heart, wanting to help others out completely, no matter what,” Sipe said. “You gotta be a very loving person to all kinds of people ─ all races, religions, disabilities. You just gotta be there.”
Sipe’s ability to adapt and connect makes her an asset to the CLC team. Whether she’s leading seated exercises, facilitating a game of Trivial Pursuit, or helping individuals eat lunch with dignity and care, her presence is felt throughout the center.
Activity-Rich Environment Supports Growth and Fun
The Creative Learning Center thrives on versatility and innovation. Classes and activities change regularly to keep participants engaged. Recent additions like karate and ballroom dancing have been big hits, expanding the program’s creative offerings.
On a recent morning, Christina led a group in chair-based exercises, ensuring everyone, including those with limited mobility, could participate. She later jumped into a Yahtzee game, fielded spontaneous hugs, and supported several individuals during lunch.
These seemingly small moments are the foundation of what makes the Creative Learning Center special: connection, dignity, and joy.
A Career Built on Compassion
Before joining Easterseals Northeast Indiana, Christina served in the U.S. Navy, worked as a nursing aide, and held positions in manufacturing. It wasn’t until her brother—also a DSP—encouraged her to try direct support work that she found her true calling.
“It was no more than a few weeks after my first shift in the group home that I knew my brother had nailed it,” she said. “I enjoyed it, just because of the type of person I am. I’m always willing to help somebody out and teach them and do what I can for them.”
The Heart of the Creative Learning Center
Tanalee Scott, supervisor of the Creative Learning Center, praised Christina’s approach.
“She’s very kind and caring. She has a compassionate heart,” Scott said. “What she does is always for the benefit of the client.”
At the heart of Easterseals Northeast Indiana’s mission is the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to live, learn, work, and play in their community. Thanks to DSPs like Christina Sipe, the Creative Learning Center delivers on that mission every day.
