Students Gain Real-World Experience Through Pre-ETS Program

Real-World Learning Through the Pre-ETS Program
During the 2018–2019 school year, 13 students from Homestead High School participated in the Pre-ETS Program, gaining valuable hands-on experience across several industries. The program helps students with disabilities explore future employment options and build confidence through practical job training and support.

Several students worked in retail stores, where they learned the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that keep businesses running smoothly. These experiences are key components of the Pre-ETS Program, which provides job exploration counseling, work-based learning, and workplace readiness training.

Learning Skills in Local Retail Environments
At the southwest Fort Wayne Goodwill store, 17-year-old Kenyon, a senior, paid close attention to detail while sorting clothing and organizing hangers. “I like doing the price tags and putting the hangers up,” he shared, taking pride in his contribution.

Andrew, also 17 and a junior at the time, worked at the Walgreens in Chestnut Hills Plaza. His duties included unloading trucks, checking inventory, stocking shelves, and pulling expired products. “I love putting things away. I think it’s fun,” he said. “I like stuff to be neat and perfect.”

At the Franciscan Family Thrift store, Richey, 18, became known for his strength and reliability. A senior, he often helped with the heavy lifting. “They usually call me to help with the heavy stuff,” he said proudly.

Opportunities Beyond Retail
The Pre-ETS Program at Homestead High School offered more than just retail experience. Students also worked at:

  • Jorgensen Family YMCA

  • Lutheran Hospital

  • Aboite Elementary School

  • Sunshine Christian Academy

  • Pizza Hut

  • Physicians Health Plan (PHP)

These placements gave students a wide range of experiences—from early childhood education to healthcare and customer service. Each opportunity helped participants develop soft skills, workplace habits, and a clearer understanding of their interests and abilities.

Preparing for the Future With Pre-ETS
By engaging in meaningful employment activities, students in the Pre-ETS Program developed critical job-readiness skills and explored different career paths. The program supports students in their transition from high school to employment or postsecondary education, encouraging independence and self-determination.

For many Homestead High School students, the 2018–2019 school year was not only about textbooks and classes—it was about discovering strengths, learning responsibility, and building a foundation for the future.
