Edward M. and Mary McCrea Wilson Foundation Grant

Fort Wayne, Ind.— Easterseals Northeast Indiana has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Edward M. and Mary McCrea Wilson Foundation to support assistive technology that helps people with disabilities live with greater confidence and independence.

The funding will help Easterseals Northeast Indiana provide a range of equipment that offers new ways to communicate, move, learn and participate in daily life. The agency expects to help 25 to 30 youths and adults in Allen County.

Assistive technology offers many benefits, including increased independence, improved communication, enhanced mobility, better health and well-being, and greater job readiness.

Assistive technology includes hardware or software, health and wellness devices, communication aids, mobility devices, sensory tools and other equipment that helps people participate in everyday life. One example is an induction stove purchased with a previous grant from the foundation. Staff and participants in the agency’s day services have used the stove to make treats for special events like birthdays, holidays, and dances together. Because induction stovetops do not get hot, these cooking activities safely teach valuable life skills and build community.
